How to Get Cited by ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews: A Practical Checklist
More buyers now ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini or Google's AI Mode before they ever click a result. Those tools quote and link a handful of sources per answer. This checklist covers what makes a page one of those sources, in the order we apply it for clients.

How does AI search choose which sources to cite?
AI search tools run a normal web search behind the scenes, read the top pages, and quote the passages that answer the question most directly. Google says its AI features draw on pages that are indexed and eligible for a snippet, with no special markup required. So the basics still decide everything: the page must be crawlable, indexed and ranking reasonably for the underlying search.
Within those pages, assistants prefer short, self-contained passages that answer the exact question, include specific facts, and come from a source that other sites mention consistently.
Step 1: let AI crawlers read your site
Check robots.txt. GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT-User (OpenAI), ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot and Google-Extended must not be blocked if you want to be cited. Make sure key content is in the server-rendered HTML, not loaded later by JavaScript, because many AI crawlers do not run scripts.
An llms.txt file at your site root, listing your key pages with one-line descriptions, is a cheap extra signal some tools read.
Step 2: answer the question in the first 40–60 words
Use the question people ask as the heading, then answer it in the first sentence underneath, repeating the question's key words. Keep that first paragraph to 40–60 words so it can be quoted on its own. Put detail, examples and caveats after it.
For example, under “How much does n8n automation cost?” start with “n8n automation costs from $200 for one workflow…”, not with background about automation.
Step 3: include facts AI can quote
Assistants favour passages with concrete details: prices, timelines, named tools, locations and real results. Vague claims like “affordable” or “fast” give them nothing to quote. If you have a case study, state the before and after in numbers.
Step 4: add schema that matches the page
Mark up service pages with Service and FAQPage, articles with Article and a real Person author, and your site with Organization including sameAs links to your LinkedIn, Clutch and other profiles. Schema will not get you cited on its own, but it helps machines connect your pages to your brand.
Step 5: make your brand consistent across the web
AI tools cross-check what they read. Use the same company name, description, services and prices on your site, LinkedIn, Google Business Profile, Clutch, GoodFirms and directories. Inconsistent details make an assistant less likely to recommend you.
Then earn mentions on sites assistants already cite for your topic: industry lists, comparison articles, review sites and partner directories.
Step 6: track whether AI mentions you
Pick 10–15 fixed prompts your buyers would ask, such as “who can replace our spreadsheets with a custom CRM?”. Ask them monthly in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Mode, and log whether you are mentioned or linked. In analytics, watch referrals from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai and gemini.google.com.
- Robots.txt allows GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot and Google-Extended
- Key content is in server-rendered HTML
- Question-shaped H2s, each with a 40–60 word direct answer
- Prices, timelines and results stated as facts
- Service, FAQPage, Article and Organization schema validate
- Same name, description and prices on every profile

Frequently asked questions
Can I pay to be cited by ChatGPT?
No. ChatGPT search citations are not sold. You earn them by being a crawlable, clear and trusted source for the question.
How long does it take to get cited by AI tools?
Pages that already rank can start appearing in AI answers within weeks of being restructured. New pages first need to be indexed and to earn some trust, which usually takes months.
Is AEO different from SEO?
AEO builds on SEO. Pages still need to be indexed and rank, but AEO adds direct answers, quotable facts and brand consistency so AI tools choose your passage.
Does llms.txt help?
It is a low-cost extra, not a ranking factor. It gives AI tools a clear list of your important pages; the content on those pages matters far more.
