Generative Engine Optimization (GEO): How to Get Your Business Cited by AI Search
More buyers now ask an AI assistant before they ever see a list of blue links. When the answer names three agencies, three tools or three products, being one of them matters. GEO is not a replacement for SEO and there is no trick that guarantees a citation, but there is a clear set of practices that makes your pages the kind of source AI systems prefer to quote.

SEO vs GEO
| Traditional SEO | Generative engine optimization | |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | Rank a page in search results | Be quoted, cited or recommended in an AI answer |
| Unit of success | A click from a results page | A mention, citation link or recommendation |
| What wins | Relevance, authority, page experience | Clear answers, specific facts, trusted and consistent sources |
| Shared foundation | Crawlable, fast, well-structured pages | Crawlable, fast, well-structured pages |
How do AI search engines choose which sources to cite?
AI search products work in broadly similar ways. They interpret the question, retrieve candidate pages (often from a traditional search index), and then generate an answer grounded in the passages they retrieved, adding links to some of those sources. Google has said that its AI features draw on the same core ranking systems as Search, and that the same SEO best practices apply.
In practice, that means a page must first be crawlable and indexable, then it must contain a passage that answers the question directly and credibly. Pages that bury the answer under long introductions, hide content behind scripts or say nothing specific are hard to quote.
Step 1: Make sure AI crawlers can reach your content
Check robots.txt. Many sites block AI crawlers by accident through overly broad rules or a security plugin. Decide deliberately which crawlers to allow: for example OAI-SearchBot and GPTBot (OpenAI), PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot (Anthropic) and Google-Extended (which controls use of content for Google’s Gemini models; Google AI Overviews use the normal Googlebot).
Make sure important content is in the HTML the server sends, not only rendered by client-side JavaScript. Keep an up-to-date XML sitemap. Some sites also publish an /llms.txt file, a proposed plain-text index that points language models to the most useful pages; it is cheap to add, although support across AI products is still limited.
Step 2: Answer the question in the first 60 words
Write a short, standalone answer directly under the heading: two to four sentences that would still make sense if they were copied into someone else’s answer. Then expand with detail, examples and caveats. This “answer first” pattern also helps featured snippets.
Use question-style headings that match how people actually ask (“How much does a POS system cost?”, “Is n8n cheaper than Zapier?”). Each section should answer one question completely.
Step 3: Be specific enough to be worth citing
Language models favour passages that contain concrete, checkable information: prices, ranges, timelines, thresholds, steps, comparisons and definitions. “Our POS systems start from $600” is quotable; “we offer affordable solutions” is not.
Tables help, because they state comparisons compactly. So do named sources for any statistic you use. Original information (your own pricing, process, data or examples) is the strongest signal of all, because it can’t be found anywhere else.
Step 4: Add structured data that matches the page
Structured data helps machines understand who you are and what a page is about. Use Organization markup site-wide, Service markup on service pages, Article markup on blog posts, BreadcrumbList for hierarchy, and FAQPage only where the questions and answers are visible on the page.
Structured data doesn’t guarantee a citation, but it removes ambiguity: your business name, services, prices and contact details become consistent, machine-readable facts.
Step 5: Build a consistent footprint beyond your website
AI answers are shaped by what the wider web says about you. Keep your business name, description and services consistent across your website, Google Business Profile, LinkedIn, directories, review sites and partner pages. Earn mentions on relevant industry sites, podcasts and comparison articles.
When several independent sources describe your company the same way, an AI system is far more likely to repeat that description with confidence.
Step 6: Target long-tail questions first
Broad questions such as “best web development company” are dominated by big publishers. Long-tail questions are where small businesses win: “custom POS system for a small restaurant”, “n8n vs Zapier for a 10-person agency”, “how to add an AI chatbot to a WordPress site”. They have less competition, clearer intent and a better chance of your page being the most specific answer available.
Build one detailed page per question, link it to the relevant service page, and link the service page back to it.
How do you measure GEO results?
Measurement is still immature. Track referral traffic from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai and similar domains in analytics, watch impressions for long question-style queries in Search Console, and regularly ask the main AI assistants the questions your buyers ask, recording whether and how your business appears. Ask new leads how they found you; “ChatGPT recommended you” is becoming a common answer.
Frequently asked questions
Is GEO different from SEO?
GEO builds on SEO rather than replacing it. The foundations are the same (crawlable, fast, well-structured pages). GEO puts extra weight on direct answers, specific facts, structured data and a consistent brand presence across the web.
Can I pay to appear in ChatGPT or Google AI Overviews answers?
No organic placement can be bought. You can only make your content easier to find, understand and trust. Be wary of anyone promising guaranteed AI citations.
Should I block AI crawlers?
It depends on your goals. Blocking them can protect content you license or sell, but it also reduces the chance of being cited in AI answers. Most service businesses benefit from allowing search-oriented AI crawlers.
Does an llms.txt file improve rankings?
There is no evidence it affects Google rankings. It is a low-cost, optional file that gives language models a clean index of your key pages; treat it as a small extra, not a strategy.
