Next.js vs React (2026): What’s the Difference and Which Should You Use?

React is a JavaScript library for building user interfaces. Next.js is a framework that uses React and adds routing, server rendering, data fetching and a production build setup. So the real question is whether you need what Next.js adds, or whether React plus a simple build tool is enough. This guide compares them for business projects. This website runs on Next.js 16 with React 19.

What is the actual difference between Next.js and React?

React gives you components and state: the building blocks of an interface. It doesn’t decide how pages are routed, how data is loaded or how the app is built and served. Next.js makes those decisions for you: each folder in the app directory becomes a route, pages can render on the server, and one project can hold both the interface and the server code behind it.

Every Next.js app is a React app. Skills, components and most libraries carry over between the two.

What does React itself recommend?

React’s documentation recommends starting a new app or website with a framework, and lists Next.js (App Router), React Router v7 and Expo for native apps. It describes building from scratch with Vite, Parcel or Rsbuild as the route for apps with constraints frameworks don’t serve well, or for learning.

In February 2025 the React team deprecated Create React App for new projects. If you have an old CRA app, the options are to move to a framework such as Next.js or to a build tool such as Vite.

When should you choose Next.js?

Choose Next.js when people need to find the site through Google or AI assistants. Next.js sends complete HTML for each page, so search engines and AI crawlers can read the content without running JavaScript, and visitors see content sooner on slow phones. It also suits sites with many content pages, e-commerce storefronts, and SaaS products whose marketing pages and app live together.

Built-in image optimisation, metadata and sitemap support, and server-side code for forms and APIs mean fewer separate pieces to build and maintain.

When is plain React enough?

Plain React with Vite is enough when the app sits behind a login, so search engines never see it: admin panels, dashboards, internal tools and many SaaS apps. Everything runs in the browser, the build is simple, and the result is a set of static files you can host almost anywhere.

It is also a good fit when you already have a separate backend, for example Laravel, Django or Node.js, and only need a front end that talks to its API.

How do hosting and running costs differ?

A plain React app builds to static files, which can be served from a CDN or any static host at very low cost. A Next.js app that renders pages on the server needs somewhere to run that code: a Node.js server, a Docker container or a managed platform. Next.js can also export a fully static site, but you then give up server features.

For most business sites the difference is small compared with the cost of building and maintaining the site. Picking the approach that fits the project matters more than hosting price.

How hard is it to move a React app to Next.js?

Because Next.js is React, components usually move over unchanged. The work is in replacing the router with Next.js folder-based routing, moving data loading to the server where it helps, and marking components that use browser-only features as client components. Next.js publishes migration guides for apps built with Create React App and Vite.

A common approach is to move the public pages first, where SEO gains are biggest, and leave the logged-in app as it is until later.

What do we build with, and why?

We build public websites and SaaS marketing pages with Next.js, because search visibility and fast first loads matter for them. This site is Next.js 16 with React 19: pages are rendered on the server, the menu links are plain HTML links, and the stylesheet is inlined so pages can render without waiting for a separate CSS file.

For dashboards and internal tools behind a login, we often use React with Vite in front of a separate API, because it keeps the app simple and cheap to host.

Frequently asked questions

Is Next.js better than React?

They aren’t competitors. Next.js is built on React and adds routing, server rendering and a build setup. It is better for public, SEO-dependent sites; plain React is simpler for apps behind a login.

Do I need to learn React before Next.js?

Yes, the basics. Next.js pages are React components, so you need to understand components, props and state first.

Is React bad for SEO?

A client-rendered React app sends mostly empty HTML and fills it in with JavaScript, which makes it harder for search engines and AI crawlers to read. Server rendering, as in Next.js, avoids that.

Do I have to host Next.js on Vercel?

No. Next.js can run on any Node.js server, in a Docker container, as a static export, or on other managed platforms.

Is Create React App still an option?

No. The React team deprecated it for new apps in February 2025 and recommends a framework such as Next.js, or a build tool such as Vite.

Can I use Next.js for a dashboard?

Yes, and it works well, especially if the dashboard shares a codebase with public pages. For a standalone app behind a login, React with Vite is often simpler.
