LMS Tech Stack Comparison 2026: Zoom API vs Google Meet vs BigBlueButton, Video Hosting, Payments and More
Every LMS is built from the same layers: live classes, recorded video, file storage, payments, notifications, AI and the core app itself. Each layer has free, open-source and paid options, and the wrong choice can mean monthly bills that grow with every student. This guide compares the real options for each layer and what we recommend at each stage.

LMS technology options by layer (2026)
| Layer | Option | Cost model | Best for | Our take |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Live classes | Zoom links via Zoom API | Paid Zoom licence per host; API itself has no extra fee | Small academies, tutors | Easiest start; students leave your platform |
| Live classes | Zoom Meeting / Video SDK (embedded) | Video SDK billed per participant-minute | Branded in-app classrooms | Polished, but costs scale with usage |
| Live classes | Google Meet via Calendar API | Included with Google Workspace | Schools already on Workspace | Cheap and reliable; can’t be embedded |
| Live classes | BigBlueButton (open source) | Free software; you pay for servers | Schools and academies | Built for teaching: whiteboard, breakout rooms, polls, recordings |
| Live classes | Jitsi Meet (open source or JaaS) | Free self-hosted, or paid hosted | Budget meetings | Simple and embeddable; fewer teaching tools |
| Live classes | LiveKit / Agora / 100ms / Daily | Per-minute usage (LiveKit can self-host) | Custom classrooms and apps | Full control of UI; needs more development |
| Recorded video | Bunny Stream | Low per-GB storage and delivery | Most LMS platforms | Best value; DRM-style protection available |
| Recorded video | Mux / Cloudflare Stream | Per minute stored and watched | Products needing analytics and scale | Excellent developer experience |
| Recorded video | Vimeo | Subscription plans | Small course libraries | Easy, but plan limits apply |
| Recorded video | YouTube (unlisted) | Free | Free or public content only | Not secure; links are easily shared |
| File storage | Amazon S3 / Cloudflare R2 / Bunny Storage | Per GB (R2 has no egress fees) | PDFs, assignments, uploads | R2 or Bunny keep download costs low |
| Payments | Stripe / PayPal | Per-transaction fee | International students | Subscriptions and invoices built in |
| Payments | Local gateways (e.g. JazzCash, Easypaisa, PayFast) | Per-transaction fee | Local students | Essential where cards are less common |
| Notifications | WhatsApp Business Platform | Per-message/conversation charges | Class reminders, absences, fees | Highest open rates for parents and students |
| Notifications | Email (Amazon SES, Resend, SendGrid) | Very low per email | Receipts, reports, password resets | Always needed alongside WhatsApp |
| AI features | Claude or OpenAI APIs | Per token used | Summaries, quizzes, course assistant | Low cost at LMS volumes when designed well |
| Core app | Next.js + Node.js / Laravel / Django + PostgreSQL | Development cost; VPS or cloud hosting | Custom LMS | No per-user licence fees as you grow |
Do you need the paid Zoom API for an LMS?
There are two very different ways to use Zoom. The first is the Zoom REST API: your LMS automatically creates a meeting for each class and shows the join link to enrolled students. The API has no separate fee, but each teacher (host) usually needs a paid Zoom licence, because free accounts have meeting time limits. This is the simplest, most familiar option and is perfect for tutors and small academies.
The second is the Zoom Video SDK, which embeds video inside your own platform with your branding. It is billed by usage (participant minutes), so costs grow with every student and every class hour. It makes sense when an in-app classroom is part of your product, not for a tutoring business that just needs reliable classes.
Always check Zoom’s current plan and SDK pricing before committing, because both change regularly.
Zoom vs Google Meet vs BigBlueButton for online classes
Google Meet is the cheapest choice if your school already uses Google Workspace: the LMS creates Calendar events with Meet links through the Google Calendar API. It is reliable and familiar, but it can’t be embedded in your platform and offers less control over recordings.
BigBlueButton is open source and designed specifically for online teaching: multi-user whiteboard, presentation upload, breakout rooms, polls, shared notes and recordings. There are no per-minute fees, but it needs a properly sized server (or a BigBlueButton hosting provider) and someone to maintain it. For academies running many classes every day, it is often far cheaper than Zoom licences.
Jitsi is lighter and easy to embed but has fewer teaching tools. LiveKit, Agora, 100ms and Daily are building blocks for developers who want a fully custom classroom UI; LiveKit can also be self-hosted to avoid usage fees.
Which live class option should you choose?
Starting out with a few teachers: auto-generated Zoom or Google Meet links. Growing academy with dozens of daily classes: self-hosted BigBlueButton inside your LMS, with recordings attached to lessons. Product company selling a branded classroom experience: LiveKit (self-hosted or cloud), Zoom Video SDK or Agora. A good LMS keeps the live-class provider behind its own scheduling layer, so you can switch later without rebuilding.
Best way to host recorded lessons
Recorded video is often the biggest running cost in an LMS. Uploading to public YouTube is free but anyone with the link can share it. Bunny Stream offers some of the lowest storage and delivery costs plus token-protected playback; Mux and Cloudflare Stream charge per minute but give excellent players, adaptive streaming and analytics. Vimeo is simplest for small libraries. We usually recommend Bunny Stream for cost, or Mux when detailed viewing analytics matter.
Payments, WhatsApp, email and AI
Use Stripe or PayPal for international card payments and subscriptions, plus local gateways or bank transfer workflows where students prefer them. Send class reminders, absence alerts and fee reminders through the WhatsApp Business Platform, which parents actually read, and keep email for receipts and reports.
AI features such as lesson summaries from recordings, practice-question generation and a course assistant that answers from your own materials can be built with Claude or OpenAI APIs. At typical LMS volumes the per-token cost is small when the feature is designed carefully.
What a sensible LMS stack costs to run
A custom LMS for a growing academy typically runs on one or two VPS servers or a small cloud setup, Bunny or Mux for video, Cloudflare R2 or S3 for files, Stripe or a local gateway, WhatsApp and email notifications, and optionally BigBlueButton on its own server. That avoids per-student licence fees entirely; your running costs track actual usage rather than headcount.
WebsNexus builds the whole stack for you
WebsNexus designs and builds custom LMS platforms end to end: student, teacher, parent and admin portals, Zoom, Google Meet or BigBlueButton integration with automatic class links and recordings, secure video hosting, payments with Stripe and local gateways, WhatsApp and email notifications, AI features, hosting and ongoing support. Frequently asked questions
Is the Zoom API free?
The Zoom REST API for creating meetings has no separate fee, but hosts typically need paid Zoom licences. The embedded Zoom Video SDK is billed by usage. Check Zoom’s current pricing before you commit.
What is the best free alternative to Zoom for an LMS?
BigBlueButton is the best open-source option for teaching, with whiteboard, breakout rooms and recordings. Jitsi is simpler. Both need a server to host them.
Can Google Meet be embedded in an LMS?
No. Your LMS can create Meet links automatically through the Google Calendar API, but the class opens in Google Meet rather than inside your platform.
Where should I host LMS videos securely?
Use a video platform with protected playback such as Bunny Stream, Mux, Cloudflare Stream or Vimeo, not public or unlisted YouTube.
Can WebsNexus integrate Zoom or BigBlueButton into our LMS?
Yes. We integrate Zoom, Google Meet, BigBlueButton and LiveKit with automatic class links, attendance and recordings. Message us on WhatsApp at +92 266 379003.
